Downers Grove is known for its beautiful neighborhoods and rising economic value. Located 22 miles west of Chicago and listed on Chicago Tribune's "Top 10 List of Downtowns," it has made quite a name for itself. Several major corporations have their headquarters located here including DeVry, Inc., Pepperidge Farm, Sara Lee and many more. Location Top

Downers Grove is located 22 miles west of Chicago. It is bordered by Westmont to the south, Lisle lies to the west, Wheaton to the northwest, Lombard to the north, Oak Brook to the northeast, Hindsdale to the east, and Clarendon Hills to the southeast.

History Top

In 1832, Pierce Downer was the founder of Downers Grove. He was a religious evangelist from New York who sought out to the midwest. Most of the settlers were from the North Eastern part of the county as well as Europe.

In 1862, the Chicago, Quincy and Burlington Railroad was extended from Aurora to Chicago. This was the main factor of its boost in population that year. The town of Downers Grove became incorporated in March of 1873.

Downers Grove real estate comprises a mixture of housing styles but prides itself in Sears-Roebuck Catalog Homes, which were built between 1908 and 1940, using purchased kits. Downers Grove means of owner-occupied housing was $215,754 in 2000 with a median value of $195,900.

The 1846 Blodgett House was established as a museum of the Undergraound Railroad, which has been moved onto the Downers Grove Museum Campus.

Transportation Top

The Metra commuter rail that runs through Downers Grove is the BNSF Railway. It consists of three main stops which are: Fairview Avenue, Main Street and Belmot Road. Downers Grove is located off of Intersate Highways 355 and 88. The area's community has a main street US 34-Ogden Avenue.

Restaurants Top

Ballydoyle Irish Pub & Restaurant, 5157 Main Street (630) 969-0600, this Irish Pub is the only one who serves McCaffery's Isirh Creme Ale. As for food, try the corned beef and cabbage or Dinny's Irish Fry which is a breakfast plate that includes bacon, eggs and even pudding!

Barone's Pizza, 417 W. 63rd St., (630) 435-5500, this pizza is amazing and served by deep-dish, thin, or stuffed crust. The deep-dish crust is buttery, the cheese is very delicious, and the sauce is fully of chunky tomatoes that give it a fresh taste that will leave your mouth watering! They have a large menu with sandwhiches, chicken, italian beef, appetizers and much more.

Capri Ristorante, 5101 Main Street, (630) 241-0695, this family owned italian restuarant, is known for it's great food and tremendous service. The Tuscan Texas toast and Carpesse Avacado appetizers are to die for. They do Penny Wine on Fridays, so be sure and stop by to get a glass of wine for only a penny!

Festivals/Parks Top

Downers Grove Park District contains over 600 acres of parks and facilities, including a golf course, Lyman Woods and the Belmont Prarie. It also has a 69,000 sqft. state-of-the-art recreation and fitness center. This park district has 49 park sites, with 24 playgrounds, 8 basketball courts, 3 fishing ponds, 17 lighted tennis courts and baseball/softball fields, 9 picnic shelters, as well as horseshoe and volley ball courts, 18 hole miniature golf, nine-hole frisbee golf, concession stands, two indoor pools, and one outdoor pool. The park district also has information available for camping, sports, youth programs, education and much more available on the Downers Grove Park District website.

Downtown Downers Grove Art Festival is held in September of every year and features the works of over 130 juried artists showcasing original artwork that will be for sale at the festival. They have several tips for artists, information about applying, employment opportunities, maps, videos and photos available on the Amdur Productions website.

Downers Grove Farmer's Market is sponsored by the Indian Boundary YMCA and is held every Saturday June to October.
